Inflatable heart craft - Coeur gonflable

Valentine's Day is fast approaching and what better way to explore the concept of heart. My son loves all scientific subjects and these days he especially loves his book Look into your body. Since then, he asked me many questions about bones and muscles and how our heart works. With Valentine's Day approaching, I liked the idea of finding a way to show him how the heart works while requiring the participation of my son. I thought, thought , thought .... Then I thought I had found the solution ..... and I thought , and thought ..... Finally ! An inflatable heart it will . I love the process of creating . Sometimes my ideas end up in a cul de sac, sometimes they simply do not work. We must never despair. Each failure leads us to other avenues and who knows? Maybe it will be good. I started my creative process thinking to make a heart with tulle and glue and here I am with this inflatable heart.

Before making the DIY heart, you could take a toy stethoscope (or true if you have one) and make the kids listen to the heart of their classmates. You could move to the sound of rhythmic song and listen to the heartbeat. You may repeat the experiment with a moment of relaxation and calm. Do not forget to make a return on their observations and experiments. You could, in response to comments from children, read a book about the heart or to find a simple but realistic picture of it. With my son, we have seen that there is a vena cava and the aorta coming out of the heart. Then we saw that there was 2 ventricles in the heart, and finally, that there are cardiac veins and coronary arteries on the heart muscle.

 To make the inflatable heart, you will need:

-a Ziploc bag;
-two straws (one red and one blue);
-two pipe cleaners (red and blue);
-a red marker;
-a hot glue gun.

First, ask the children to color the bag in red with the red marker. Then, have them cut the pipe cleaners of different lengths. You could leave the image of the heart close so they can refer to it easily. With caution, help the children glue the pipe cleaners on the bag to recreate the cardiac veins and coronary arteries. Note: Make clear to the children that they have to make ONE cardiac vein (blue) and one coronary artery (red). he reason is to be able to recreate the 2 ventricles: the hot glue melts and merge the 2 sides together creating 2 different ventricles. All they have to do now is to insert a blue and a red straw and zip the bag! Voila! Their heart is ready to beat the rhythm! Have the children gently blow into the straws and watch as their heart beats!

-un sac Ziploc;
-deux pailles (une rouge et une bleue);
-deux cures pipes (un rouge et un bleu);
-un marqueur rouge à feutre large;

Here is a lottle video showing my son 's heartbeat.
